Job Overview
We are seeking a skilled and experienced Captain to lead our crew and ensure the safe and efficient operation of the vessel. The Captain commands and navigates the ferry in accordance with GNWT's standing orders as well as Transport Canada regulations and ensures that the ferry is in safe working order throughout the hours of operation The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership abilities, mechanical knowledge, and a commitment to maintaining high safety standards. As a Captain, you will be responsible for navigating the waters, managing the crew, and ensuring compliance with Transport Canada regulations.
Duties
- Commands and navigates a passenger vehicle ferry on a fast flowing river under various weather and ice conditions.
- Ensures the transportation of pasengers and vehicles in accordance with Canada Shipping Act, safe working practices and related regulations.
- Oversees all aspects of vessel operations, including navigation, safety protocols, and crew management.
- Ensures compliance with all laws and regulations.
- Conducts regular inspections of the vessel to ensure it is in optimal working condition.
- Supervises crew including orientation, on board training and appraising employee performance.
- Supervises the crew in the safe loading and unloading of the ferry.
- Makes decisions concerning the safety of ship, passengers and crew and supervises the crew during emergencies.
- Maintains and completes logs, records and reports relating to the ferry, traffic and marine incidents.
Experience
- Current valid Master's Certificate
- Proven experience as a Captain or in a similar leadership role within the industry.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to lead and motivate a diverse team.
- Familiarity with navigation systems and regulations is essential.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions while maintaining composure under pressure.
