The Environmental Monitor will primarily be responsible for coordinating daily compliance activities and monitoring duties during construction activities.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Conduct daily inspections of construction activities and attend construction meetingsConduct wildlife monitoring activities, as requiredEnsure implementation of mitigation measures from project environmental protection plan, permit conditions, and best management practicesInspect implemented erosion and sediment control measures and provide recommendations for repair and correction, as neededOversee and direct soils handling activities (e.g., topsoil stripping)Develop and implement corrective action plans and mitigation measures for any identified environmental issues or hazardsSupport Canacre’s commitment to safety by participating in safety meetings, following safety policies, and being an advocate for safe work practices in the fieldAct as an environmental lead for the Environment teamAct as a resource to construction personnel and guide environmental regulations and how they are applied in the fieldAct as a point of contact for the Client and Construction ContractorsVerify that environmentally sensitive areas are properly marked and flagged before work is started in the areaCoordinate daily with construction team to discuss upcoming construction activities, potential problem areas, and areas of environmental concernCoordinate with construction personnel to provide necessary information and facilitate regular communication among all partiesInspect areas of concern and make appropriate recommendations to construction personnel, as requiredComplete daily, weekly, and monthly environmental reports, including reports of wildlife sweeps, and environmental incidentsReview field reports for consistency and accuracySupport the preparation of environmental permits, when requiredCoordinate with regulatory agencies, as requiredPerform other duties as required.QUALIFICATIONS:EducationPost-secondary degree/diploma in Biology, Environmental Science, or related field of studyFormal leadership training would be considered an assetExperience5-7 years professional experience as a Biologist, Environmental Monitor, Environmental Inspector, Environmental Planner, or related roleWildlife experience e.g., at least one field season of demonated experience in nest sweeps or avian surveys Experience related to linear projects - pipeline, transmission line and renewable energy construction would be an asset.Experienced leading field programs, and coordinating with various field teamsExperience and knowledge related to other biophysical disciplines, such as wetlands, vegetation, aquatics, etc. would be an asset.Designation or certification related to erosion and sediment control, such as CPESC, CESSWI, etc., would be an asset.Knowledge/SkillsStrong verbal and written communication skills – data collection and interpretation, technical report writing, regulatory permit applications, client communications, etc. Strong working knowledge of environmental regulations and best management practicesExperience developing summary reports related to construction activities and/or compliance statusExperience with ESRI products, such as ArcGIS Pro, Survey 123 and Field Maps would be an assetExcellent interpersonal and communications skillsStrong analytical, problem-solving skills, prioritizing and decision-making skillsExcellent attention to detailAbility to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously with minimal supervisionDetail-oriented, self-motivated and highly organized with strong problem-solving skillsAbility to build strong, lasting relationships with key stakeholders.Excellent written and verbal communication skillsWorking knowledge of Microsoft OfficeValid Driver’s License, with ability to maintain insurability under the company’s insurance carrierAt Canacre, our benefits program is one of the ways in which we reinforce the value we place on employees and the role they play in helping us achieve our goals.
