The Government of the Northwest Territories is seeking a Water Resource Officer to join the Department of Environment and Climate Change in Inuvik.

About the Role
Working throughout the Beaufort Delta Region, you'll play a key role in protecting water resources through inspections, investigations, environmental monitoring, compliance activities, and technical advisory services. You'll work with Indigenous governments and organizations, industry, communities, regulators, and resource users to ensure water and land resources are managed responsibly and sustainably. The role combines office-based analysis with extensive field work in remote northern environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct inspections, investigations, and compliance activities related to water licences, land use activities, and environmental protection
- Respond to environmental incidents and spills, collect evidence, and support enforcement actions when required
- Review and evaluate technical plans, environmental reports, monitoring programs, and resource development proposals
- Provide expert advice on water resource management, environmental protection, and regulatory requirements
- Support environmental assessments, permitting, licensing, and regulatory review processes
- Work closely with Indigenous governments, industry, municipalities, resource users, and community organizations to promote compliance and best practices
- Travel throughout the region by aircraft, ATV, boat, snowmobile, and other means to conduct field inspections and investigations in remote locations
Qualifications
Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:
- A Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field
- Three (3) years of directly related experience in water resource management, watershed management, environmental compliance, regulatory administration, or renewable resource development
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
Additional requirements include:
- Valid Class 5 driver's licence
- Valid Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL)
- Ability to meet annual work simulation fitness standards
- Ability to work in remote locations and challenging northern field conditions
