The Department of Government Services is recruiting for immediate and anticipated vacancies for Environmental Health Officer positions of various durations and in various locations. As an employee, you will be provided with the appropriate equipment to help you to perform the duties of an Environmental Health Officer. You will work with and contribute to the protection of public health and safety through regular inspections, enforcement, consultation, and education. You will be further supported with ongoing mentorship and partnering with an experienced Officer for on-the-job training.
About Us
We operate Government Service Centres to provide a single point of entry to the general public and the business community. These Centres provide licences, permits, inspections, approvals, design plan reviews and certificates related to numerous service areas. This includes Environmental Health Officers who work with various inspection staff and are based out of a number of locations such as: Mount Pearl, Bay Roberts, Clarenville, Marystown, Gander, Grand Falls – Windsor, Lewisporte, Corner Brook, Springdale, Stephenville, St. Anthony, and Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
About the Opportunities
The Environment Health Officer position is responsible for the protection of public health and safety through regular inspections, enforcement, consultation, and education. This includes:
- interpreting, implementing and enforcing environmental health acts and regulations, policies and procedures;
- completing inspections of food establishments, schools, personal care homes, childcare facilities, personal services facilities and public swimming pools;
- enforcing the tobacco, vapour products and smoke-free environment legislation;
- performing water sampling and issuing/rescinding Boil Water Advisories;
- investigating food, water and vector borne illnesses; completing meat inspections;
- conducting investigations, gathering evidence and preparing detailed documentation in cases of non-compliance;
- conducting site assessments for sewage systems;
- performing other related duties as required.
Screening Criteria
About You
Your education includes completion of a bachelor’s degree from a program accredited by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (https://ciphi.ca/certification/) and completion, or enrolled/near completion of a Certificate in Public Health Inspection, Canada [CPHI(C)].
Assessment Criteria
As an Environmental Health professional, you demonstrate time management and organizational skills to support the effective delivery of the Environmental Health Program. In your frontline service role, you communicate clearly and professionally with a diverse range of stakeholders, fostering positive and collaborative relationships. You apply sound conflict resolution strategies while educating the public on environmental health practices and ensuring compliance with relevant environmental health legislation, regulations, and policies.

- Proof of Certificate in Public Health Inspection, Canada [CPHI(C)] upon completion
- Proof of valid class 5 driver’s license
- Recent and satisfactory criminal record check from local police
Conditions of Acceptance
- Willing to accept overnight travel
- Willing to accept day travel
- Acknowledges requirement of use of private vehicle (with business insurance)
