A well-rounded, intermediate Geotechnical Engineer demonstrating knowledge combined with ingenuity is exactly what Canadian Natural is seeking for this role. Canadian Natural’s geotechnical teams provide in-house technical, professional, and engineering leadership to support mining operations at the Horizon Oil Sands mine.
This role is responsible for producing design, construction and performance monitoring solutions for mine earth structures, including tailings containment dams, pit walls, waste dumps, and other civil infrastructure. You will be expected to progress into the role of Designer of Record and/or Engineer of Record, as described by the Alberta Dam and Canal Safety Directive.
* Some travel to Horizon Oil Sands as needed by the business
Key Accountabilities:
- Perform geotechnical engineering designs for mine earth structures, including tailings containment dams, pit walls, waste dumps, and other civil infrastructure
Support the planning and execution of geotechnical drilling programs and complete regular inspections of operating and under-construction structures
Work with the Engineer of Record and Designer of Record to support design, construction execution, performance monitoring, and perform resident engineer duties as required within an active oil sands mine
Conduct assurance-focused site inspections, including survey checks, fill placements, stakeholder engagement, and performance evaluations
Plan, implement, and assess instrumentation programs to monitor the performance of earth structures and pit wall slopes; prepare as-built records and performance reports, and engage stakeholders to review findings and actions
Prepare geotechnical engineering documentation to support regulatory authorizations; contribute to Annual Performance Review reports; and support the development of work standards, procedures, and Horizon Dam Safety Management System governance programs
What You Bring to the Role:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil or Geological Engineeringwith specialization in Geotechnical Engineering; a Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering is an asset
Registration with APEGA, or eligibility for registration, is required
5+ years of experience in geotechnical engineering design, analyses, report writing, instrumentation data analysis and reporting and field experience in foundation investigations, earthworks construction and instrumentation monitoring
- Experience in oil sands mining is preferred
- Previous mining and geotechnical engineering experience, preferable in the oil sands industry and experience with the geological and geotechnical conditions of the oil sands region is preferable
- Highly capable with Microsoft Office tools, AutoCAD/Civil 3D, GeoStudio, and other geotechnical engineering design or analysis software
