Our client, a major Oil and Gas company, is looking for a Waste Advisor to join their team on a 1-year contract in Calgary.
The Waste Advisor provides operational support for waste management programs across Canadian operations, with a primary focus on upstream and downstream facilities. The role is responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance, supporting waste approvals and amendments, identifying continuous improvement opportunities, and providing guidance to site teams on waste management requirements and best practices.
Key Responsibilities
Waste Management & Compliance
- Act as the environmental waste management subject matter expert (SME) for operations across Canada.
- Provide operational support and guidance on waste management activities to ensure compliance with applicable federal, provincial, and local regulations.
- Identify opportunities to improve waste management practices, waste minimization efforts, and overall compliance performance.
- Support the development, implementation, and maintenance of site-specific waste management plans and procedures.
- Track, analyze, and report waste generation, disposal, recycling, and recovery volumes.
Regulatory Approvals & Reporting
- Prepare and submit regulatory applications, waste approval amendments, permits, and supporting documentation.
- Support landfill approvals and amendments, including preparation of technical and regulatory submissions.
- Coordinate and manage regulatory reporting requirements related to waste management and TDG programs.
- Support regulatory inspections, audits, and compliance assessments, including interactions with environmental regulators.
Stakeholder & Community Engagement
- Support engagement activities related to waste management approvals and license amendments.
- Advocate for company interests while maintaining positive relationships with external stakeholders, communities, and regulatory agencies.
- Assist in preparing materials and responses associated with public consultation or regulatory review processes.
Third-Party Waste Management
- Manage relationships with third-party waste receivers, disposal facilities, landfills, recyclers, and treatment vendors.
- Ensure waste is transferred to approved facilities in accordance with regulatory and company requirements.
- Evaluate disposal options and support optimization of waste management strategies.
Waste Tracking & Electronic Systems
- Maintain and oversee waste tracking processes and electronic manifesting systems.
- Ensure accurate documentation and recordkeeping for waste shipments, transfers, and disposal activities.
- Monitor waste performance metrics and provide reporting to internal stakeholders.
Operational Support
- Provide waste management support for turnarounds (TAs), shutdowns, and major maintenance events.
- Assist site teams in planning and executing waste management requirements during operational projects.
- Support waste transportation activities, including rail shipments and associated compliance requirements.
Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG)
- Provide support and guidance related to TDG requirements as they intersect with waste management activities.
- Assist with TDG reporting and documentation requirements as needed.
- Collaborate with dedicated TDG resources to ensure regulatory compliance.
Qualifications
Required
- Degree or diploma in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Technology, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in environmental management, with a strong focus on waste management.
- Strong knowledge of waste management regulations and requirements, particularly within Alberta and applicable Canadian jurisdictions.
- Experience supporting industrial, oil and gas, petrochemical, refining, or energy sector operations.
- Experience preparing regulatory submissions, permits, approvals, and amendments.
- Knowledge of landfill operations, waste disposal practices, and waste transportation requirements.
- Experience managing third-party waste contractors and disposal facilities.
- Proficiency with waste tracking systems and electronic manifesting platforms.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
Preferred
- Knowledge of Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations.
- Experience supporting turnaround and shutdown activities.
- Experience working directly with regulators during inspections and compliance reviews.
