The sustainability specialist will be an integral member of Sobeys’ national sustainability team and will play a role in implementing key initiatives related to the corporate sustainability strategy. The specialist will drive meaningful change related to environmental commitments, which be measured and tracked for progress. Reporting to the corporate sustainability manager, the incumbent will work in partnership with a variety of functions across the business, as well as external partners.
The purpose of this position is to support, facilitate, and advance Sobeys’ sustainability strategy and related programs by designing, implementing, or facilitating initiatives and programs. The role will primarily support the Products pillar, as well as Quebec-based initiatives under the Planet pillar, in particular those related to food waste and waste management. This is a hybrid position that requires you to be in the office three times a week at our Montréal-Nord office.
Here’s Where You’ll Be Focusing
- Support key programs related to our “Products” pillar, including the collection and analysis of data on sustainable fish and seafood products, human rights due diligence, and supply chain decarbonization.
- Coordinate the operations of the main internal committees and working groups, both in English Canada and in Quebec.
- Lead a two-year pilot project aimed at reducing food waste in distribution centres and stores in Quebec.
- Serve as the primary representative for sustainability in external initiatives in Quebec, including managing relationships with key partners, participating in industry committees, and overseeing the sustainability booth at the annual trade show.
- Contribute to the preparation of public reports on key sustainability issues as part of the sustainability report.
- Support the development of the company’s positioning on climate, nature, and biodiversity.
Your Skills
- Must be fully bilingual (French/English) : The candidate will be expected to work with peers in other provinces in the development, development and implementation of tools and processes across Canada, as well as provide support to Sobeys employees across Canada
- Motivation, proactivity, and a passion for positive change.
- 1 to 3 years of experience in the field of sustainability is a plus, but recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
- Postsecondary degree in environmental science, business sustainability, data analysis, or a related field.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (particularly Excel), database management, and data analysis.
- Strong communication skills to prepare reports, briefings, and presentations to inform decision-making.
- Ability to multi-task, organize and plan effectively, and meet multiple deadlines.
- Strong research skills and resourcefulness are essential.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to be a team player.
- Forward-thinking mindset and a proven ability to innovate and think outside the box.
- Optimistic attitude.
