Materials Technician (Seasonal)
Role Summary
BASE is looking for seasonal Material Technicians to join our team in Grande Prairie for the 2024 Construction Season! We are offering positions from April to May, providing the perfect opportunity to gain hands-on experience to enhance your understanding of the construction industry. Material Technicans play a critical role in our construction projects by providing on site testing services for aggregate, soils, concrete, and asphalt. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge of ASTM, ATT, and CSA test procedures, and gain experience interpreting project drawings on site to ensure proper testing procedures are being used with support from the Regional Lab Supervisor.

Key Aspects
- Conduct field and laboratory testing of aggregate, soils, concrete, and/or asphalt using nuclear densometers and other required equipment.
- Consistent and accurate creation/submission of daily field and laboratory tests results to the Regional Geotechnical Supervisor(s).
- Complete daily time tickets and field level hazard assessments in a timely manner.
- Assist with training and mentorship of new staff members as required.
Other Duties & Responsibilities
- Safe operation, storage, transportation, security, and maintenance of nuclear densometer.
- Review and interpret project drawings and specifications to ensure proper testing procedures are being used
- Effectively communicate with the Geotechnical Supervisors, project managers, coworkers, clients, and contractors as required to ensure project alignment. This includes escalating issues that may arise on site to the Geotechnical Supervisor as appropriate.
- Learn and apply related ASTM, ATT, CCIL, and CSA test procedures.
- Actively engage and comply with the BASE Health & Safety Program.
- Adhere to safe work practices and ensure required PPE is in good working condition and is being used when appropriate as per the BASE Health & Safety Program.
- Additional duties as required.
Qualifications
- Technical Diploma in Civil Engineering is an asset with 1+ years of progressive work-related experience.
- Experience in a consulting engineering environment would be considered an asset, specifically materials testing including aggregate, soils, concrete, and/or asphalt.
- Experience in Geotechnical Engineering investigation, inspections, and reporting would be an asset (specifically geotechnical field drilling, pile construction inspections, foundation bearing inspections, proof rolls, etc.).
- Experience and knowledge of ASTM, ATT, and CSA test procedures.
- Ability to review and interpret field and laboratory reports and results.
- Ability to review and interpret project drawings and specifications.
- Have thorough knowledge of all laboratory and field procedures and provide support to ensure proper safety and quality guidelines maintained.
- Valid CCIL concrete and aggregate certification(s).
- Hold a valid Class 5 Driver’s License with no restrictions.
- Posses or be welling to obtain certifications in First Aid – Level C & WHMIS with GHS.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Programs (Word, Excel, etc.).
- Proficient desktop computer skills (email, PDF editing programs, etc.).
- Able to travel and work a flexible/rotating schedule to support field and construction projects, including ability to work weekends.
- Able to lift and carry 50 lbs or more over a distance.
- Able to work safely on rugged or steep terrain.

Wage range $24.00 - $29.00 (hourly), can be negotiated based on experience.
