Black Fly is seeking Intermediate Environmental Scientists to join our biophysical teams, based out of our Calgary or Edmonton office. This is primarily a field-based role. When not in the field, Black Fly offers fully remote work arrangements with occasional travel to Black Fly offices required. This role is suited to an environmental scientist who has moved beyond entry-level field work and is ready to take on greater responsibility leading field programs, mentoring junior staff, and contributing directly to technical deliverables for our clients. As Environmental Scientist, you will be responsible for supporting a variety of project field work. This may include (subject to technical experience and background): wildlife sweeps and surveys; fish salvage and rescue; invasive weed surveys; wetland delineations; rare plant surveys; environmental construction monitoring; collecting field data and samples as well as managing, analyzing and compiling data, and preparing reports.
In this role, you will:
- Act as crew lead on assigned field programs including owning field preparations and on-site client logistics, quality data collection, and training junior staff in a safe and efficient manner
- Conduct biophysical surveys to support impact and effects assessments, inform avoidance and mitigation measures, support project regulatory permitting, and support environmental compliance.
- Assist with the design of field programs under the guidance of senior biologists and project managers
- Collect, manage, and interpret field data to support project deliverables in a manner consistent with Black Fly's quality standards
- Contribute to and co-author technical reports, regulatory submissions, and permit applications
- Liaise with project managers, clients, and field crews to ensure programs are delivered safely, on schedule, and within scope
- Contribute to a strong safety culture, including adherence to Black Fly's Health and Safety requirements during field deployments
Key qualifications include:
- B.Sc. in biology, ecology, environmental science, or a related discipline
- Approximately 3–7 years of relevant consulting experience (preference for Alberta, British Columbia, or North of 60)
- Professional Biologist (P.Biol) and/or Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio.) and/or Professional Agrologist (PAg) in good standing, or eligible for registration
- Self-designations such as Qualified Aquatic Environmental Specialist (QAES) or Authenticating Wetland Professional (AWP) are considered an asset
- Working knowledge of federal and provincial environmental regulatory requirements (Fisheries Act, Water Act, Wildlife Act, Species at Risk Act, Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act)
- Strong technical writing skills and experience contributing to reports and regulatory submissions
- Valid Class 5 driver's licence and a clean driving record
- Current standard field safety tickets (First Aid, H2S Alive, CSTS, Electrofishing Crew Lead, Swiftwater Rescue, etc.) are considered an asset
- Comfortable working independently and as part of a team in variable field conditions, including remote and physically demanding sites
