Job Summary:
We are seeking a Sustainable Trail Technician to join our team. This is a specialized role that combines technical environmental knowledge with high-performance trail construction. The successful candidate will ensure that our mountain bike and multi-use trail systems are built to the highest ecological standards, minimizing impact on local watersheds and sensitive habitats.
Key Responsibilities:
- Environmental Monitoring: Conduct pre-construction site assessments to identify sensitive flora, fauna, and watercourses.
- GIS & Mapping: Use GIS and GPS tools to flag trail corridors, map topography, and ensure alignment with design specifications.
- Drainage & Hydrology: Design and implement erosion control measures and drainage systems (culverts, grade reversals) to manage water runoff based on local soil science.
- Technical Construction: Execute high-level trail features, including rock armouring, retaining walls, and sustainable tread excavation using specialized hand and power tools.
- Compliance Reporting: Ensure all field work aligns with Nova Scotia Environment (NSE) regulations and project-specific environmental permits.
Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, or a related field (or equivalent technical experience).
- Certifications: GIS (Geographic Information Systems) certification is highly preferred.
- Experience: Previous experience in environmental consulting or technical field work.
- Physical Capabilities: Must be able to work in rugged, remote terrain in all weather conditions and lift to 50 lbs.
- Other: Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
